High contrast black & white is one of my favorite flavors of portrait photography. I love the way light can be used to highlight some features of a subject while other parts fade into shadowed obscurity.
I have been thinking about this project for a while and had the perfect opportunity to make it happen this weekend with the crazy cold weather.
For this on-site studio session we used a mobile backdrop and portable off-camera strobe. The subjects, Allie and Cam, wore black shirts that blend into the background leaving only their faces and arms illuminated. The composition can be changed greatly just by shifting the light from 45º front to side facing, or rear lighting for a halo-like profile shot.
This was a really fun shoot. Please reach out if you'd like to create a similar styled shoot. The simple but dramatic nature of these photos would be perfect for a portrait, engagement, or even maternity shoot.
